An Interactive Non-Interaction
The environments of daily life are becoming increasingly homogenous, sterile and functional places of passage.
project:non
investigates the non-interactive effects of these spaces with regard to the phenomena of isolation, automated processes and efficiency. The three disruptive objects
wait
,
follow
and
reach
question these phenomena and attempt to break them.
non-place
We want to give this pictorial and two-dimensional world more substance and texture. This starts with creating the attention and consciousness for this topic. There is where
project:non
links to. After an intesive design research and analysis we could elaborate many aspects and behaviours that are typical for the non-place. We lead back all aspects to missing social and spatial interactions.
wait

The isolation of people in a nonplace is induced by a specific posture and the distraction with a medium. More specifically, this means that a person is concentrated on a smartphone or a paper in a rather forward bent posture facing to the floor or the medium.
wait
is made of ground sills. These force the visitor to focus on the floor, through which the typical isolating posture is assumed.
follow

The element escalator is an inherent part of non-places
follow
uses the element of the handband of escalators and puts it in space. The invitation to grasp the handband exists without the floor moving as well. The usual experience of the escalator ruptures and a weird moment is created. The need for the incentive by someone else stands for the control and conduct which are given by the non-place.
reach

Following the signs to find the most direct way to the next place is typical human behaviour.
reach
is made up of three signs that each can show either to the left or to the right. The direction is influenced by the visitor who understands this only as he walks in circles.
reflection
What is the reason for the need of the object?
Which effect would the intercation between me, the object, the space and other persons have?
Why can't I experience the chosen space?
